With the support of a Rotary global grant and project partners AMURDC, HandUp Congo, ACRRM and Rotary Club of Taree, obstetric emergency training continues in the DRC.
This month, the sprawling city of Mbuji-Mayi (Kasai region) will host two workshops: July 20-21 and July 27-28. The training coordinator is obstetrician-gynecologist Dr Jacques Badianyama Tshilumba.
In September, Dr Bosolo Yoursen and Dr Charlene Ashikani Adju will lead the training in Lotumbe, Equateur Province, which the project leader, Dr Grace Maano, has already visited twice with HandUp Congo teams. While Lotumbe is isolated and only accessible by river, it does have a hospital and is a maternal health hub.
“Our train-the-trainer project aims to provide Congolese healthcare teams with the necessary skills and equipment to manage life threatening obstetric emergencies,” explains Dr Grace.
"With a population of more than 109 million, the DRC has one of the highest numbers of maternal and neonatal deaths in the world."
